Mothers in Jail: Parent-Child Separation and Jail Visitation

Creasie Finney Hairston

This article presents the findings of a study of 56 women who were confined in a county jail. It describes the women's family characteristics and examines their parenting roles and responsibilities, plans for family reunification, and concerns about their children visiting them. The study's findings and those of other studies are used to make recommendations for policies and programs.
