Learned Helplessness: A Factor in Women's DepressionThis article explores depression in women and its relationship to the theory of learned helplessness. The revised model of this theory is used to examine how women are socialized into helpless behaviors in Western culture and how this socialization contributes to the high rates of depression in women. The author calls for a new awareness of helpless behaviors as women's first step in their quest for empowerment. Feminist therapists have much to offer women as together they explore society's expectations of them as females, career women, wives, and mothers.
