Department of Sociology, FOB 237, California State University, Northridge, 18111 Nordhoff Street, Northridge, CA 91330-8318elizabeth.e.bartle.{at}csun.edu This article presents a focus group study of the perceptions of welfare participants in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and Los Angeles County, California, of various aspects of welfare, subsidized child care, jobs with living wages, the counties' employment programs, and the participants' relationships with welfare workers. The results suggest that participants are not receiving the support they need to obtain and retain jobs that will lead to self-sustaining careers.
